Most household cleaning injuries come from mixing products, poor ventilation or unsafe storage. This guide explains the basics our own cleaning teams are trained on, written for families, local news readers and community groups. Always follow the label on the product you are using.

Never Mix These Products

  • Bleach and ammonia (including some glass cleaners) release toxic chloramine vapors.
  • Bleach and acids such as vinegar or some toilet bowl and rust removers can release chlorine gas.
  • Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar mixed in the same container form a corrosive acid.
  • Different drain cleaners can react violently; never use one right after another.

Ventilation

Open a window or run the bathroom exhaust fan when using bleach, oven cleaner or strong descalers. Leave the room if you feel dizzy, get a headache or have trouble breathing, and get fresh air right away.

Storage

  • Keep products in their original, labeled containers. Never pour cleaners into drink bottles.
  • Store them up high or in a locked cabinet, away from food.
  • Keep lids tightly closed and never store products in a hot garage for long periods; Texas summer heat can degrade containers.

Kids and Pets

Keep children and pets out of the room while floors and surfaces are wet with cleaner. Rinse surfaces pets lick or walk on, and wipe up spills immediately.

If Someone Is Exposed

For a swallowed product, splash in the eyes or breathing trouble, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (available 24/7 in the U.S.) or 911 in an emergency. Have the product container with you when you call.
